Where to fish Atlantic salmon in Quebec? Best Gaspésie, North Shore and Saguenay rivers, fly-fishing techniques, MFFP permits and optimal seasons for your 2026 trip.
Why Atlantic salmon in Quebec?
The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is Quebec's most prestigious fish — the "king of freshwater fish". Quebec has over 100 salmon rivers across Gaspésie, the North Shore, the Saguenay and the Lower North Shore. With records over 25 kg (Cascapédia, Bonaventure), it's a world-class fly-fishing destination.
But which river to pick? How much does it cost? Here's the 2026 playbook.
Quebec salmon regions
Four regions concentrate the salmon rivers:
| Region | Rivers | Style | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaspésie | ~25 major | Classic fly fishing | Easy (road-accessible) |
| North Shore | ~30 | Large powerful rivers | Medium |
| Saguenay | ~10 | Fly + drift | Easy |
| Lower North Shore | ~20 | Wild, isolated | Hard (plane/boat) |
Gaspésie — the Quebec salmon Mecca
The Gaspésie is the best-known salmon region and likely the most beautiful salmon destination in North America.
Cascapédia
Legendary. Records over 25 kg. Tightly controlled (lottery system for premier sectors), high prices. Season: June 1 – September 30.
Bonaventure
Crystal-clear water — literally see the salmon. Ideal for sight fishing. ZEC managed, accessible day tickets. Stable salmon population. Season: June 15 – September 30.
Restigouche
New Brunswick border. One of the world's biggest salmon rivers. Massive salmon (15–20 kg frequent).
Matapédia
Long (~110 km), public access and ZEC sectors. Democratic — ideal for beginners.
Sainte-Anne and Madeleine
Heart of Gaspésie National Park. Spectacular setting.
York and Saint-Jean (Gaspé)
Easy access from Gaspé town.
North Shore — wild and imposing
The North Shore stretches 1,300 km along the St. Lawrence. Bigger, more powerful rivers in wilder settings.
Moisie
Considered one of the world's best salmon rivers. "River of kings". Records 30+ kg. Access via Sept-Îles. High-end outfitters.
Saint-Jean (near Sept-Îles)
Excellent and relatively accessible.
Mingan, aux Rochers, Trinité, Pentecôte
Productive medium rivers, ZEC managed.
Saguenay — Sainte-Marguerite river
Sainte-Marguerite (Saguenay)
THE Saguenay salmon river. Well-managed ZEC, easy access from Tadoussac. Perfect for beginners.
Petit-Saguenay
Smaller but productive.
Lower North Shore — total adventure
For seasoned anglers seeking absolute isolation: Natashquan, Petit Mécatina, Romaine, Olomane — accessible only by floatplane or boat. 3,000–8,000 CAD/week. Zero crowds.
Atlantic salmon vs ouananiche
| Atlantic salmon | Ouananiche | |
|---|---|---|
| Species | Salmo salar | Salmo salar (same!) |
| Habitat | Anadromous (sea + river) | Freshwater only |
| Avg size | 4–8 kg | 1–3 kg |
| Main region | Gaspésie, North Shore | Lac Saint-Jean, Tremblant |
| Season | June–September | April–October |
| Permit | Specific salmon permit | General permit only |
Important: the ouananiche is technically the same species but landlocked. Fished at Lac Saint-Jean (its capital), Lac Tremblant, several hydro reservoirs.
Techniques
Fly fishing (the royal method)
80% of Quebec salmon rivers are fly-only, often barbless. Classic flies: Bombers, Green Highlander, Black Bear Green Butt, Cosseboom, Silver Doctor.
Rod #8–10, floating WF line, 12–15 lb leader.
See our complete fly fishing guide.
Spoon and drift
Some powerful rivers (Moisie) allow wobbling spoons or weighted-fly drift. Always check the river's specific regulation first.
