Fishing in your classroom
Each species with an image we can trace, its French name and its scientific name. Then flip it over: the image stays, the name disappears, and four answers appear.
Shown
The image, the French name, the scientific name, and who made the image. Images were fetched from Wikimedia Commons and iNaturalist by scientific name, so the match between the name and the fish comes from a source — not from someone typing. We say “image”, not “photo”: a few are scientific plates or drawings, and a class should not have to guess which it is looking at. One species of our 209 has no traceable image, so it is not on this wall.
Not shown
Sizes, habitats and diets. Those columns were filled in bulk on 191 of our 209 records: the same average size on 165 species, the same habitat on 97, and the walleye — a freshwater fish — filed under salt water. Showing them in a classroom would be teaching a copy-paste mistake.
That is the lesson, really: a database can be wrong in perfect silence. Nothing looks broken. You find out by checking one record against a source — and then by checking a second one.
