Four traits every fish shares

  • a flexible backbone
  • cold blood
  • fins
  • gills

A whale has a flexible backbone, but it is warm-blooded and breathes with lungs. A frog has a backbone and cold blood, but it breathes with lungs too. Neither one is a fish.

For the teacher

  • Project the board and let pupils come up and click. “Explore” gives the answer; “Name it” asks for it.
  • The adipose fin is the one worth stopping on: science does not know what it is for, and the board says so. A class that learns a science can say “we do not know” has learned something real.
  • The four shared traits — backbone, cold blood, fins, gills — sort a whale and a frog out of the fish family in under a minute.
  • Every fact on the board links to the government document it comes from. Nothing here was written from memory.
