The Montreal-based environmental education organization offers two activities. "Pêche en herbe": 4 hours and 30 minutes in partner parks, in the fall and spring — fish anatomy, species identification, regulations and safety, rod assembly, and then fishing; youths aged 9 to 12 on the day of the activity receive a fishing certificate. "Découverte de la pêche": 2 hours for ages 8 to 12, at the Pavillon du Parcours Gouin or Beauséjour Park, maximum of 15 youths.

The Fédération québécoise pour le saumon atlantique runs a mentoring program that has already helped over 650 people get started with salmon fishing, with around fifty volunteer mentors. It is not a paid course but rather guidance — the least intimidating entry point to this type of fishing.
Good for : Trying salmon fishing without investing before being sure.

Ask whether gear is provided. Most schools and every river initiation lend rod, reel and line — which spares you buying before you know what you like.
Brook trout is the entry species par excellence: present everywhere, reachable on small rivers. Before every trip, check your fishing zone — rules change from one zone to the next, and many salmon sectors are fly-only.
