The St. Lawrence — Quebec's fishing playground
The St. Lawrence River crosses Quebec for over 1,200 km, from Lake Ontario to the estuary. It's the most important fishing ecosystem in the province, with over 100 species of freshwater, anadromous, and catadromous fish.
River sections and MFFP zones
Lake Saint-François (Salaberry-de-Valleyfield → Beauharnois)
MFFP zone 9. Shallow, rocky, weedy. Walleye, pike, bass, perch (open).
Lake Saint-Louis (Beauharnois → Lachine)
Zone 9. Strong current, river mouths. Abundant walleye and pike.
Greater Montreal area
Zones 8 (north shore) and 9 (south). Urban water, easy access.
Lake of Two Mountains
Zone 9. Strategic confluence. Striped bass during migration, walleye, pike, bass.
Repentigny → Sorel-Tracy
Zone 8. Transition to Lake Saint-Pierre.
Lake Saint-Pierre (Sorel → Trois-Rivières)

Trois-Rivières → Quebec City
Zone 8 then 27. Narrower, fast current. Striped bass migration, lake sturgeon.
Quebec City → estuary
Zone 27 then 21. Brackish water. Capelin, smelt, striped bass, sturgeon.
Main species
Walleye
King of the river. Yellow walleye: 2/day in zones 7-8 (NEW 2026, cut from 6), 6/day elsewhere. Black walleye: opens June 1 in zones 7/8/21/27.
Northern pike
Throughout. 2026 zones 7/8/21/27: 1/day, 70 cm min, line only.
Smallmouth and largemouth bass
Strong population. Opens 4th Saturday of June. Limit 6/day.
Striped bass
Spring (May-June) and fall (Sept-Oct) migration. 50-65 cm range only.
Yellow perch
Open at Lake Saint-François and Saint-Louis. MORATORIUM at Lake Saint-Pierre + zones 7-8 sections until 2027.
Lake sturgeon
Protected species in deep holes.
Capelin
Beach spawning late May-June (Charlevoix, North Shore).
Rainbow smelt
Popular winter fishing. Season Dec 1 – Apr 23.
