— Buyer’s guide 2026
In Quebec a fishing day often goes from a cold morning to midday sun, with a chance of rain in between. Here’s how to dress to stay dry, warm and protected all season.

Layering system (3 layers): a base layer that wicks moisture, an insulating layer (wool or fleece), and a wind- and waterproof outer shell.
Waterproof, breathable jacket: for rain and spray, without turning the inside into a sauna.
UPF sun protection: a long-sleeve shirt, plus a buff or neck gaiter to protect your neck and face from sunburn on the water.
Fishing gloves: protect against cold, sun and cuts when handling fish and lines.
Hat or cap: wide brim for sun, or a beanie for cold spring and fall days.
Dress for the water temperature (safety): in cold water a fall overboard is dangerous — dress for the water temperature, not just the air.
Quick-dry fabrics: avoid cotton, which stays wet and cold; choose synthetics or merino wool.
Columbia
The accessible, do-it-all mainstream option. Omni-Shade sun protection, quick-dry fabrics and reasonably priced rain jackets you can find almost anywhere. Downside: more generalist than technical, less specialized than dedicated fishing brands. For whom: the angler who wants solid value and a wardrobe that doubles for hiking.

The specialist in light, affordable rainwear. Jacket + pants sets that pack down in your bag and come out when the shower hits, without emptying your wallet. Downside: less durable and breathable than premium shells, so treat them gently. For whom: anyone who wants effective backup rain protection without a big investment.

The high-end benchmark for demanding anglers. Wading jackets, technical layers and finishes built to last seasons of heavy use. Downside: the price, well above average. For whom: the avid angler who fishes often, in rivers or rough weather, and invests in gear that lasts.

Performance-driven with a modern look. UPF shirts, technical quick-dry fabrics and cuts made for long days in the sun on the water. Downside: the range leans toward warm weather, less for deep cold. For whom: the summer and boat angler who wants to stay cool and protected from UV.

A pick driven by season, not brand. Thin UPF models to block summer sun, or insulated gloves for cold and ice fishing; some half-finger for dexterity. Downside: one pair rarely covers every condition. For whom: anyone handling lines and fish who wants to protect their hands from sun, cold or cuts.
