Overview
The lake whitefish, also known as 'lake cisco', is a popular freshwater fish in Quebec, especially for sport fishing. Found in several lakes and reservoirs in the province, it is valued for its delicate flesh and moderate fight. Although less combative than some other salmonids, it still offers an interesting challenge for anglers due to its vivacity and speed. Primarily distributed in southern and central Quebec, it is often targeted in large water bodies like Lake Saint-Jean and Gouin Reservoir.
Identification
The lake whitefish has a fusiform and elongated body, typical of salmonids. Its color varies from blue-green to silver-gray on the back, lightening on the sides to become silver. Its belly is generally white. The fins are clear, sometimes slightly tinted gray. The mouth is small with nearly equal jaws, and the eyes are relatively large. The scales are small and smooth, providing a soft texture to the touch. Young fish resemble adults closely but are often more slender. During spawning, males and females do not show marked differences, although males may be slightly more colorful.
The lake whitefish can be confused with the lake cisco.

Distribution in Quebec
The lake whitefish is widely distributed in the cold and deep waters of Quebec. It is mainly found in the lakes and reservoirs of the southern and central parts of the province, such as Lake Saint-Jean, Gouin Reservoir, and some lakes in the Laurentians. It is less present in the warmer waters of southwestern Quebec and rarely observed in rivers. Its presence is generally abundant in lakes where it is well adapted to cold and oxygenated conditions.
Habitat
The lake whitefish prefers large, deep lakes and reservoirs where the water is cold and well-oxygenated. It often frequents areas near submerged structures like sandbars and rocky zones. During the summer, it is typically found at depths ranging from 10 to 30 meters, following thermoclines. It is particularly active in areas where the water temperature remains between 4 and 10 °C, ideal conditions for its metabolism.
Life cycle
The spawning of the lake whitefish generally occurs in the fall when the water temperature drops to around 4 °C. The fish gather in large groups in shallow, rocky areas to spawn, without building elaborate nests. The eggs are left to settle in the substrate, hatching in the spring with rising temperatures. The young grow rapidly, reaching sexual maturity between 2 and 4 years. Their longevity is around 7 to 10 years, although some individuals may live longer.
Spring → Hatching → Rapid Growth → Summer → Maturity → Fall → Spawning → Winter → Survival under ice
Behaviour
The lake whitefish is generally social, forming schools that move according to environmental conditions. It is not particularly territorial, preferring to move around to find food. Sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure, it may dive deeper when a weather front arrives. It is also influenced by light, being more active during low-light periods, such as early morning or late evening.
Diet
The diet of the lake whitefish varies according to its life stage. Fry primarily feed on zooplankton and aquatic insects. As they grow, adults diversify their diet by adding small fish, crustaceans, and insect larvae. In winter, their metabolism slows down, and they feed less frequently, favoring easy-to-catch prey.
Seasons & best times
In spring, the lake whitefish is active as soon as the ice melts, seeking prey in shallow waters. In summer, it is found deeper, following thermoclines. Fall is a key period for spawning, when it migrates to breeding areas. In winter, it is less active but remains accessible for ice fishing. The best times to fish for it are early morning and late afternoon, especially on cloudy or overcast days.
Fishing techniques
This technique is effective in summer when the lake whitefish is deeper. Use a spoon or a diving lure. Troll slowly to mimic an injured prey. Be sure to adjust the speed according to the fish's activity.
Ideal for deeper waters in fall. Use a jig with natural or artificial bait. Let the jig drop to the bottom and reel it in with jerks. Be careful to feel the subtle bites.
Effective in spring and fall near shores. Use flies that imitate aquatic insects. Cast and let it drift naturally in the current. Be sure to choose the right fly according to the season.
Popular in winter. Use a line with a small luminous lure or natural bait. Drill several holes to find schools. Be patient and attentive to light bites.
Used in shallow lakes in summer. Attach a light lure and dandle it above the bottom. This method mimics an injured fish, attracting the lake whitefish.
Lures & colours
In clear water, prefer silver or white lures that closely mimic forage fish. In murky water, brighter colors like yellow or orange can help attract the lake whitefish's attention. On sunny days, opt for non-reflective lures to avoid dazzling the fish. On overcast days, metallic or luminous lures may be more effective. At depth, use lures that emit vibrations or sounds to compensate for the lack of light.
Recommended gear
For the lake whitefish, a rod of 1.8 to 2.4 meters, light to medium power and fast action, is ideal. A lightweight spinning reel with a line capacity of 4 to 8 lb is recommended. Use hooks size 8 to 12, depending on the bait. A fluorocarbon leader can be useful for its stealth underwater. For ice fishing, a shorter rod and a baitcasting reel are preferable.
Handling & release
Handle the lake whitefish carefully to avoid injuring it. Use a landing net to bring it out of the water and minimize the time spent out of water. For a successful release, ensure that the fish is well oxygenated before letting it go. For photos, support it gently under the belly and take the photo quickly to reduce stress.
Predators
The lake whitefish is preyed upon by several aquatic predators such as pike and yellow perch. Birds like the osprey and the ring-billed gull may also target young whitefish. Larger fish and aquatic mammals like otters are also potential predators.
Conservation & status
The lake whitefish is generally healthy in Quebec, with stable populations in most lakes where it is present. Stock management is ensured by fishing regulations that limit catches and protect spawning periods. Catch and release is encouraged to maintain healthy and sustainable populations.
