Overview
The spotted lumpsucker, or Leptoclinus maculatus, is a small marine fish that inhabits the coastal waters of Quebec. Although it is not particularly sought after for sport fishing due to its modest size and low fighting ability, it plays an important ecological role in marine ecosystems. It is mainly found in cold, shallow waters, making it a common species along the eastern coasts of Quebec, particularly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Its presence is a good indicator of the health of the marine environment, and it serves as prey for many marine predators.
Identification
The spotted lumpsucker is a small fish with an elongated body that is slightly compressed laterally. Its color varies from brown to olive green, sprinkled with dark spots that give it its name. These spots are more pronounced in young individuals. Its mouth is small, adapted to its diet mainly consisting of small invertebrates. The fins are generally inconspicuous, with a continuous dorsal fin that extends over most of its back. The caudal fin is rounded and relatively small. The scales are small and smooth, almost invisible to the naked eye. Differences between sexes are not marked, but females may be slightly larger during spawning.
Here’s how to distinguish the spotted lumpsucker from a neighboring species.
| Criterion | Spotted lumpsucker | Arctic blenny |
|---|---|---|
| Size | ≈ 15 cm | ≈ 20 cm |
| Color | Brown to olive green with spots | Uniform gray-blue |
| Habitat | Shallow waters | Deeper waters |
| Dorsal fin | Continuous | Segmented |
Distribution in Quebec
The spotted lumpsucker is mainly found in the coastal waters of Quebec, particularly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and along the coasts of Gaspésie and Côte-Nord. It is absent from the warmer waters of southern Quebec, preferring the cold temperatures of northern regions. Although it is not abundant enough to form large schools, it is common enough to be an important element of local marine ecosystems.
Habitat
This species frequents salty and slightly brackish waters, preferring rocky areas and seabeds covered with algae. It is often found at shallow depths, generally between 1 and 20 meters, where it feeds and hides from predators. The spotted lumpsucker prefers cold waters, with an ideal temperature range between 2 and 10 °C, making it more active in winter and early spring.
Life cycle
The reproduction of the spotted lumpsucker occurs in spring, when water temperatures begin to rise slightly. Females lay their eggs on rocky substrates, where they adhere until hatching. The eggs hatch within a few weeks, releasing larvae that drift with the plankton before settling on the seabed. Young fish reach sexual maturity in 1 to 2 years. The spotted lumpsucker has a relatively short lifespan of 3 to 5 years.
Spring → Spawning and laying → Summer → Growth of young → Fall → Maturation → Winter → Reduced activity
Behaviour
The spotted lumpsucker is a rather solitary species, although it can sometimes be observed in small loose groups, especially during the spawning season. It is not particularly territorial, but it prefers areas where it can easily hide among rocks and algae. It is sensitive to changes in light and often remains hidden during the day, becoming more active at dawn and dusk.
Diet
The diet of the spotted lumpsucker mainly consists of small benthic invertebrates, such as copepods, amphipods, and small crustaceans. Young fish feed on plankton before switching to a more varied diet as adults. In winter, when food is less abundant, it may become more opportunistic, feeding on whatever it can find.
Seasons & best times
The spotted lumpsucker is active year-round, but it is easier to observe in spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler. In summer, it often takes refuge in shaded or deeper areas to avoid warmer temperatures. It is more active at sunrise and sunset, taking advantage of reduced light conditions to feed. Weather conditions, such as wind and atmospheric pressure, have little impact on its behavior.
Fishing techniques
The spotted lumpsucker can sometimes be caught by hand in tidal rocky pools at low tide. This method is more of an educational activity than a true sport fishing technique.
Lures & colours
Given the small size of the spotted lumpsucker and its limited interest for sport fishing, lures are generally not used for this species. If you want to observe or capture it for study, a small net or fish trap may be more effective than using lures.
Recommended gear
To observe the spotted lumpsucker, a simple pair of polarized glasses to reduce glare from the water may suffice. If you are looking to capture it for study, a small net or fish trap is recommended. There is no need for sophisticated equipment for this species.
Handling & release
If you catch a spotted lumpsucker, handle it carefully to avoid damaging it. Use wet hands to minimize stress and injury to the fish. Return it to the water quickly after observation or measurement to ensure its survival.
Predators
The spotted lumpsucker is prey for many marine predators, including larger fish such as cod and hake. Seabirds, such as gulls, may also feed on these small fish when they are near the surface.
Conservation & status
The spotted lumpsucker is not currently considered a threatened species in Quebec. However, the quality of its habitat is essential for its survival. Conservation efforts focus on protecting coastal areas and reducing marine pollution to preserve this vital ecosystem.
