Overview
The redbelly dace, although not highly valued as a sport fish, is a fascinating species to observe. This small fish is mainly known for its bright coloration and its crucial role in the aquatic ecosystem of Quebec. It is primarily found in the freshwater bodies of the province, where it serves as prey for many predators. Its presence is a good indicator of watercourse health, and it contributes to biodiversity by controlling aquatic insect populations.
Identification
The redbelly dace is easily recognizable due to its slender body and bright coloration. Males, especially during spawning, display a bright red hue on the belly and flanks, while females have duller colors. The back is generally olive to brown, with silver flanks. The fins are transparent, and the mouth is small and upward-facing, adapted for capturing surface insects. Young fish are paler, with less pronounced longitudinal stripes. The scales are small and smooth.
The redbelly dace can be confused with other dace species.
| Criterion | Redbelly Dace | Red-Finned Dace |

| Size | ≈ 5 to 8 cm | ≈ 5 to 10 cm |
| Coloration | Bright red belly (males during spawning) | Reddish fins |
| Habitat | Clear, cool waters | More varied waters |
| Mouth | Small, upward-facing | Small, terminal |
Distribution in Quebec
The redbelly dace is widely distributed in southern and central Quebec. It is primarily found in the watersheds of the St. Lawrence, Outaouais, and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. This species prefers clear, cool streams and rivers, but it can also inhabit some shallow lakes. It is generally absent from large, fast-flowing rivers and very turbid waters.
Habitat
The redbelly dace prefers small watercourses, streams, and moderately flowing rivers where the water is clear and well-oxygenated. It often seeks refuge near the banks, where aquatic vegetation is abundant. The ideal depth is usually shallow, often less than two meters, as this fish prefers areas where light penetrates easily. Temperatures should remain moderate, around 15 to 20 °C, for the species to thrive.
Life cycle
The reproduction of the redbelly dace occurs in spring when the water temperature reaches around 15 °C. Males then develop a bright red coloration to attract females. The female lays her eggs on gravel or sand substrates, often in shallow areas. The eggs hatch quickly, within a few days, and the fry begin to feed on small aquatic organisms. They reach sexual maturity in one to two years. Spring → Spawning → Summer → Growth → Fall → Preparation for winter → Winter → Dormancy
Behaviour
The redbelly dace is a social fish, often living in small schools. It is not territorial and shares its habitat with other fish species. Sensitive to changes in atmospheric pressure, it tends to seek refuge in deeper areas during storms or when water levels drop suddenly. It is primarily active during the day, feeding at the surface or in the water column.
Diet
The diet of the redbelly dace varies according to its life stage. Fry primarily feed on plankton and small aquatic invertebrates. As they grow, their diet expands to include aquatic insects, larvae, and small crustaceans. In summer, they feed more actively at the surface, while in autumn, they go deeper to feed on what is available.
Seasons & best times
The redbelly dace is most active in spring and summer when water temperatures are ideal. During these seasons, it is often visible near the surface, especially in the morning and late afternoon. In autumn, its activity gradually decreases, and it moves to deeper waters for winter. Cloudy, windless days are ideal for observation, as they become less skittish.
Fishing techniques
The best way to observe the redbelly dace is to position yourself near the shore, early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Look in shallow areas with abundant aquatic vegetation. Use polarized glasses to reduce glare on the water.
To capture specimens for study, use a small hand net. Approach slowly so as not to scare the school. Pass the net underwater and gently lift it. Be sure to handle the fish carefully for later release.
To capture their vibrant colors, an underwater camera is ideal. Take photos in shallow, clear waters for best results. Morning is the best time to benefit from good lighting.
Although not a common practice, the redbelly dace can be used as bait for larger species. Be sure that this is allowed by local regulations before using it in this way.
Lures & colours
Although the redbelly dace is not a target for lures, its presence can indicate good spots for other species that feed on them. In clear, sunny waters, silver or gold lures can mimic the light reflections on their scales. In murkier conditions, brightly colored lures can attract the attention of predators hunting for daces.
Recommended gear
For observation or non-sport capture, a light rod of 1.5 to 2 meters is sufficient. A simple reel with a 4 to 6 lb line is ideal. Use small barbless hooks to avoid injuring the fish. If you are capturing daces for study, a small net is more appropriate than a rod.
Handling & release
If you catch a redbelly dace, handle it with wet hands to avoid removing the protective mucus from its skin. Release it quickly after observation to minimize stress. For photos, keep the fish in the water as much as possible.
Predators
The main predators of the redbelly dace are larger fish such as pike and yellow perch. Aquatic birds like kingfishers and herons also feed on daces. They play an important role in the aquatic food chain.
Conservation & status
The redbelly dace is not an endangered species in Quebec. However, its health depends on the quality of aquatic habitats. Pollution and habitat destruction can negatively impact their populations. Catch-and-release of these fish is encouraged to maintain ecological balance.
