Overview
The black darter, although little known, is a small freshwater fish found in the rivers and lakes of Quebec. Part of the Percidae family, it is often underestimated by sport anglers as it does not present a challenge in terms of fighting. However, it plays an important ecological role as prey for larger fish and aquatic birds. It is mainly found in clear, shallow waters, where it easily camouflages itself due to its discreet appearance.
Identification
The black darter has an elongated body that is slightly compressed laterally. Its color ranges from brown to olive green with dark band patterns that allow it to blend into its environment. Its mouth is small and oriented downward, adapted to its benthic diet. The dorsal fins are separate, with the first being spiny and the second softer. Its tail is slightly forked, and its scales are small and rough to the touch. Males during breeding season display brighter colors, especially on their fins, to attract females, while females remain duller.
The black darter can be confused with other species of darters.

Distribution in Quebec
The black darter is found in several regions of Quebec, notably in the watersheds of the Saint Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. It is also found in certain rivers in northern Quebec, although it is less abundant there. It is primarily present in clear, shallow waters with gravel or sandy bottoms, where it can easily camouflage itself. The species is less frequent in very acidic or heavily polluted waters.
Habitat
This fish prefers small rivers and streams with moderate to fast currents. It often stays near the bottom, among stones and gravel, where it finds its food. Clear, well-oxygenated waters are essential for its survival, and it generally avoids stagnant waters. It is found at depths ranging from 30 cm to 1 meter, where it can effectively hide from predators.
Life cycle
The reproduction of the black darter occurs in spring when water temperatures reach around 15 °C. Males build nests in the gravel where females come to lay their eggs. After laying, the males guard the nest until the eggs hatch, which occurs after about a week. The fry grow quickly, reaching sexual maturity in one to two years. Their lifespan is relatively short, generally not exceeding four years.
Spring → Spawning → Summer → Fry growth → Autumn → Preparation for winter → Winter → Resting period.
Behaviour
The black darter is a rather solitary fish, although loose groups may form in food-rich areas. It is territorial, especially during breeding season. Sensitive to changes in light, it prefers shaded areas and is more active at dusk. Loud noises and sudden movements can scare it into hiding.
Diet
The diet of the black darter mainly consists of aquatic invertebrates, such as insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms. Fry feed on zooplankton and microorganisms until they are big enough to catch larger prey. In summer, food availability increases, while in winter, metabolism slows down and feeding becomes more sporadic.
Seasons & best times
The black darter is primarily active in spring and summer when temperatures are mild and food is abundant. It is easier to observe early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is softer. Cloudy or slightly rainy days can also promote its activity, as it is less exposed to predators. In winter, its activity decreases significantly, and it takes refuge in areas where the current is weak.
Fishing techniques
Use small flies imitating aquatic insect larvae. Fish early in the morning or in the evening. Avoid sudden movements that could scare the fish. Use a light leader for a delicate presentation.
Worms are an effective natural bait. Present it near the bottom, where the black darter feeds. Favor areas with moderate current. Use a small hook to match the fish's mouth.
Small soft lures or spinners can attract attention. Cast near rocky structures. Retrieve slowly to mimic easy prey. Be patient, as the black darter is not a great fighter.
Use a light float to keep the bait at the right depth. Ideal for shallow areas. Adjust the depth according to the fish's activity. Watch carefully, as bites can be subtle.
Lures & colours
In clear waters, prefer natural colors like olive green or brown. In overcast weather or murky water, brighter colors like yellow or orange may be more effective. Small lures imitating insects or larvae are often the most productive. Adjust the lure size to the small mouth of the black darter to maximize catch chances.
Recommended gear
To fish for the black darter, a light rod of 1.5 to 2 meters is ideal, with a fast action for increased sensitivity. An ultralight reel spooled with 2 to 4 lb line is recommended. Use hooks sized 8 to 12, suitable for the small mouth of the fish. A fluorocarbon leader can be useful for its invisibility in clear water.
Handling & release
Handle the black darter carefully, as it is small and fragile. Use wet hands to avoid damaging its skin. If you release it back into the water, do so gently and ensure it has regained its balance before letting it go. For a photo, hold it close to the water to minimize time out of the water.
Predators
Predators of the black darter include larger fish like pike and yellow perch. Aquatic birds such as herons and kingfishers also pose a threat. Due to its small size, it must remain vigilant to avoid these predators.
Conservation & status
The black darter is not considered a threatened species in Quebec. However, preserving its natural habitat is essential to maintain its populations. Anglers are encouraged to practice catch and release to ensure the species' sustainability.
