Quebec fishing — the species to know

Pêche Québec — yellow walleye, the most popular sport species

Quebec hosts nearly 200 freshwater, brackish and anadromous fish species. Top sport species: yellow walleye (Sander vitreus), northern pike (Esox lucius), smallmouth and largemouth bass, brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), lake trout (touladi), Atlantic salmon on Gaspé and North Shore rivers, and ouananiche — the iconic landlocked salmon of Lake Saint-Jean.

Add muskellunge (Quebec's largest freshwater predator, regularly exceeding 100 cm), the recovering striped bass on the St. Lawrence since its 2002 reintroduction, rainbow smelt in the lower estuary, tomcod in some southern rivers, and the protected lake sturgeon that haunts the deepest river holes.

Each species has its own opening period, quota and often minimum size. Major 2026 changes: lake trout daily limit cut to 1 across zones 1-20 and 26; yellow walleye limit cut to 2 across zones 7/8/21/27; pike at 1/day with minimum length raised to 70 cm in the same zones; copper redhorse banned everywhere.

Quebec fishing — which baits and lures to use

Pêche Québec — baits and lures for Quebec fish species

Bait choice changes everything. By species, season and water temperature, some lures work and some don't. Quebec universal classics: earthworm for brook trout and perch, dead minnow for walleye (live minnows are banned everywhere in Quebec since April 1, 2017), Williams spoon for trout and pike, Mepps Aglia #2-3 spinner for almost everything, and the Senko wacky-rigged for bass.

Going deeper, our catalog lists 101 baits and lures rated by effectiveness ★, sorted in 8 categories: natural baits, soft plastics, hard baits, spinners/spoons, jigs, flies, ice-fishing baits, and specialized. Each fact-sheet covers technique, animation, recommended gear, target species and ideal season.

Critical to remember: live baitfish are BANNED everywhere in Quebec since 2017, including for ice fishing, and 33 freshwater species can never be used as bait (even dead) to prevent invasive species introduction. Importing baitfish is also banned without exception.

Quebec fishing — the guide to get started

Pêche Québec — beginner fishing guide

If you're new to Quebec fishing, the learning sequence is always the same: valid permit, basic gear (medium 6'6" rod, 2500 spinning reel, 15 lb braid + 10 lb fluorocarbon leader), pick a spot near you, learn your zone's rules, then a few outings to read water and observe fish behavior.

Our Fishing Guide hub covers the 3 essential themes — baits, techniques, weather reading — with long-form content built for Quebec anglers. Also covers seasons, gear, responsible fishing and respect for the natural environment.

Quebec fishing — our most popular spots

Pêche Québec — Laurentides and Lanaudière, popular regions

Ask Quebec anglers their favorite spots and certain names always come up: Lake Saint-Pierre between Sorel and Trois-Rivières (35 km × 12 km of grassy bays for pike, walleye, bass and muskie), Lake Saint-Jean which is THE world capital of ouananiche, Gouin reservoir for back-country fishing quality, Lake Memphrémagog for muskie and burbot, and the Sorel archipelago for accessible multi-species diversity.

The St. Lawrence — often overlooked — is actually Quebec's most diversified fishing ecosystem: walleye, pike, bass, perch, sturgeon, striped bass, muskie, plus winter smelt and tomcod. Different sectors offer very different experiences: Lake Saint-François upstream, Lake Saint-Louis, Greater Montreal area, Lake Saint-Pierre, Trois-Rivières-Quebec stretch, then the estuary from Tadoussac.

For lodge fishing with accommodation, options abound: 11 SÉPAQ wildlife reserves, 62 ZECs, hundreds of outfitters with or without exclusive rights. Our outfitter directory covers it all.

Quebec fishing on ice (pêche blanche)

Pêche Québec on ice — ice fishing on a frozen lake

Ice fishing is a Quebec institution. As soon as the ice is thick enough (10 cm minimum for a single angler, 20 cm for a group, 30 cm for a snowmobile), hundreds of shelters appear on the province's frozen lakes. Top winter targets: yellow perch (most accessible, cluster fishing), walleye (dawn/dusk), pike (tip-up), lake trout (deep vertical jigging), burbot (night), smelt (St. Lawrence, Dec 1 to Apr 23), tomcod in some southern rivers.

Key rules: max winter lines per angler (varies per zone — 5 on Lake Aylmer in zone 7), shelter ID rules (visible name + contact), mandatory removal before ice melt, and for 2026: total walleye + pike closure between March 16 and 31 on zones 7 and 8. Live baitfish remain BANNED — use dead bait (where allowed), worms and imitations like ice jigs, ice raps and short stickbaits.

Quebec fishing — regulation, permits and zones

Pêche Québec — 2026 regulation and MFFP permits

Fishing in Quebec requires a valid sport permit (with exceptions: under 18 with Pêche en herbe certificate, the Fishing Festival in June, certain zones), a government photo ID, and knowledge of your zone's rules. Quebec is divided into 29 fishing zones, each with its own opening dates, quotas, minimum sizes and water-body exceptions.

2026-2027 standard sport permit prices: $26.73 for a resident adult annual, $21.21 for 65+, $95.68 for non-resident annual. The Atlantic salmon permit is separate: $59.76 resident annual with 4 tags, $191.72 non-resident annual. Short-term 1-day, 3-day and 7-day options exist.

The 11 banned practices to know: fishing simultaneously with line + fly, selling or buying fish caught with a sport permit, fishing outside permitted period/place (even with planned release), intentionally modifying hooks, transporting live fish, and of course using live baitfish. Mandatory release applies in 5 specific cases. The ability to fish in any zone does not in any way affect ancestral and treaty rights of Indigenous communities.
