🧵 Gear — Fishing line

Braid, fluorocarbon or monofilament

Buyer’s guide 2026

Your line is the direct link between you and the fish. Braid, fluorocarbon and mono have very different properties — here’s how to choose based on your rig and target species.

How to choose your line

  • Braid: no stretch, very high sensitivity and strength, thin diameter for its test — great as main line, but visible in the water.
  • Fluorocarbon: nearly invisible underwater, good abrasion resistance and it sinks — ideal as a leader in front of braid.
  • Monofilament: stretchy and floating, cheap and easy to knot — a good choice for beginners and topwater lures.
  • Pound test (lb): match it to the fish — ~4 to 8 lb finesse (trout, perch), 10 to 14 lb all-round (walleye, bass), 20 lb+ for pike and lake trout.
  • Diameter: at equal test, braid is thinner than mono — more line on the reel and better casting.
  • Color and memory: high-vis braid to track your line, clear fluoro/mono for stealth; beware of cheap mono memory (coils).
  • Winning combo: braid as main line + a fluorocarbon leader — braid sensitivity with fluoro stealth.
