Fishing reels: spinning, baitcaster and fly

Buyer’s guide 2026

The reel stores and releases your line, and its drag absorbs the fish’s runs. Here’s how to choose between spinning, baitcaster and fly, and how to match it all to your rod.

How to choose a reel

  • Type: spinning (versatile and easy), casting / baitcaster (accuracy and power for big lures), or fly (hand retrieve, dedicated drag).
  • Reel size (1000 to 5000): 1000–2500 for trout and perch, 3000–4000 for bass and walleye, 4000–5000 for pike and heavy water.
  • Gear ratio: a high ratio (6.2:1 and up) retrieves fast, a low ratio (5.x:1) gives more torque for big lures.
  • Drag power and smoothness: a strong, progressive drag prevents line breaks on runs and jumps.
  • Number of bearings: more (stainless ball) bearings = smoother rotation, but quality matters more than quantity.
  • Material and weight: a light aluminum or graphite body reduces fatigue over a long day.
  • Match reel + rod + line: balance reel size with rod power and line diameter for a harmonious setup.
