— Buyer’s guide 2026
A trolling motor lets you move silently, hold a slow troll and position precisely without spooking the fish. Here’s how to pick yours based on your boat and how you fish.

Thrust (lbs): the heavier the boat, the more thrust you need. As a rule of thumb, aim for about 2 lbs of thrust per 50 lbs of fully loaded weight.
Voltage 12V / 24V / 36V: 12V is enough for a small boat; 24V and 36V deliver more thrust and runtime for bigger boats.
Shaft length: long enough to keep the prop submerged even in waves — measure from the mount point to the waterline.
Bow vs transom mount: a bow mount pulls the boat and gives more control; a transom mount is simpler and cheaper.
Control type: foot pedal, hand control, or wireless remote — pick what fits your style and how you fish.
GPS and position hold: a Spot-Lock style feature keeps the boat in place automatically, no anchor — great in wind.
Fresh vs salt water: choose a saltwater-rated model if you fish in salt to avoid corrosion.
