Marine lithium batteries (LiFePO4)

Buyer’s guide 2026

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) changed the game for powering a trolling motor and fishing electronics. It’s far lighter than lead-acid or AGM, delivers vastly more charge cycles, and holds a stable voltage right to the end of the discharge — your motor keeps its power instead of fading. Here’s how to pick the right battery for your setup.

How to choose a marine lithium battery

  • LiFePO4 chemistry: the safest and most durable lithium chemistry, ideal for marine use (vs classic lithium-ion).
  • Capacity in amp-hours (Ah): more Ah = more runtime. Pick based on how long you fish and how much your motor draws.
  • 12V voltage: the baseline. For larger 24V or 36V motors, wire 2 or 3 12V batteries in series.
  • Built-in BMS: the Battery Management System protects against overcharge, deep discharge and short circuits — essential.
  • Continuous discharge current: make sure it covers your motor’s current draw, especially at full power.
  • Weight: a big lithium advantage — often half or a third of an equivalent lead battery.
  • Cold-weather behavior: important in Quebec. Many LiFePO4 batteries won’t charge below freezing (some have internal heating). Charge and store the battery warm in winter.
  • Cycles and warranty: compare the rated cycle count and warranty length — that’s what justifies the price.
  • Lithium-compatible charger: use a charger made for LiFePO4; an old lead-acid charger may charge poorly or damage the battery.

A small dedicated 12V battery keeps you from draining the motor battery.

An entry-level option is still lighter and more durable than lead-acid.
