Weighted sinking lures (Leurres coulants) are a Quebec specialty bait that excel in targeting a multi-species range, including species like pike, walleye, and lake trout. Unlike traditional surface lures, these baits sink and can be presented at various depths, making them effective across different seasons and conditions.
To maximize their effectiveness, try the jerk and pause technique. Cast your weighted sinking lure, such as the Rapala Shadow Rap, allowing it to sink to the desired depth. Then, employ a series of sharp jerks followed by pauses, mimicking the action of a distressed baitfish. This method works particularly well in the St. Lawrence River, where fish are often holding near submerged structures.
Another effective technique is the slow retrieve. Pair a Mepps Aglia or Strike King KVD Jerkbait with a medium-action rod and 10-12 lb test line. Cast out and retrieve slowly, allowing the lure to wobble enticingly. This method is particularly effective in the Gaspé region, where fish are often found lurking near rocky shores.
For an advanced tip, consider matching the lure colour to the water clarity. In clearer waters, opt for natural colours like shad or perch, while in murkier conditions, brighter colours such as chartreuse or fire tiger can create more visibility and attract attention. Adjusting your bait to the environment can significantly improve your success rate.
