Aluminum fishing boat: buyer’s guide for Quebec

Buyer’s guide 2026

Light, near-indestructible and easy to trailer, the aluminum boat is king of Quebec’s lakes. Here’s how to pick the right size, bottom and hull for the way you fish.

How to choose your boat

  • Length (12 to 16 ft): a 12 ft handles two anglers on a small lake; a 14 ft is the versatile standard; a 16 ft adds room, stability and capacity for bigger water.
  • Gauge (aluminum thickness): a lower gauge number means thicker, tougher metal. A 0.080 in hull shrugs off rocks far better than a thin 0.050 in entry-level boat.
  • Flat bottom vs V-hull: a flat bottom is rock-steady in calm water and great for lake fishing; a V-hull (semi-V or deep-V) cuts the chop and stays safe when wind picks up on a big lake.
  • Weight capacity: respect the maker’s plate (people + motor + gear). Budget generously: cooler, battery, anchors and a trolling motor add up fast.
  • Riveted vs welded hull: riveted is light and cheaper; welded is more watertight and durable, but heavier and pricier.
  • Seats, livewell and storage: check the seats (foam vs bare aluminum), an aerated livewell to keep fish alive, and dry lockers for your gear.
  • Motor: gas outboard or electric depending on the lake’s rules. Note the maximum horsepower allowed on the boat’s plate.
  • Trailer: a galvanized trailer resists corrosion. Check the total weight (boat + motor + trailer) your vehicle can tow, plus lights and registration.
