The blade bait, a favourite among ice anglers, is designed to entice species like yellow perch and walleye during the cold winter months. Its unique design allows it to vibrate and emit a strong flash, mimicking the appearance of injured baitfish. This attribute is particularly beneficial in the St. Lawrence River and Lake St. Jean, where walleye are actively hunting.
For effective presentation, consider using a 7-foot medium-action rod paired with a 2000-size spinning reel. Attach a blade bait—like the Williams Wobbler—to your line and drop it down to the desired depth. A great technique is the yo-yo retrieve: lift the rod tip sharply and then let it fall, allowing the bait to flutter back down. This mimics the erratic movement of a wounded fish, attracting predators lurking nearby.
Another technique is the steady retrieve. This involves reeling the blade bait steadily while occasionally pausing to let it sink slightly. This method works particularly well in the Gaspé region, where walleye often hang near structure and will strike at the bait’s flash.
For an advanced tip, experiment with colour variation; during low-light conditions, switch to brighter colours like chartreuse or orange to enhance visibility. Conversely, during sunny days, opt for more natural tones like silver or gold. This small change can significantly increase your success rate on the ice.
