Fishing Advent Calendar 2026: Which One to Buy
What is really behind the 24 doors, when to order so it arrives in time in Canada, and what to give an angler if the calendars are sold out.
Giving an angler an advent calendar means giving them twenty-four small reasons to think about next season while the lakes freeze over. Behind each door: a lure, a hook, a swivel, sometimes an accessory. It works as well for adults as for children, and it has become one of the most requested fishing gifts of the last three years.
But they are not all equal, and the word "calendar" hides very different contents: some are genuine assortments of branded lures, others a handful of small bits an angler already owns three times over. This page explains what to look at before buying, and what it is worth.
Two things to know right away. Fishing advent calendars are made in limited runs and several models sell out by late November — ordering in October usually costs less and avoids disappointment. And if nothing is left, you can simply build one yourself: the recipe is further down.

What is actually inside a fishing advent calendar?
The classic format is twenty-four numbered doors, one a day from December 1st to the 24th. The contents almost always split into three families: lures (soft plastics, spinners, crankbaits, jigs), terminal tackle (hooks, swivels, weights, snaps, leaders) and a few accessories (pliers, a box, line, bite indicators).
The balance between the three changes everything. A calendar mostly filled with lures makes a gift you can see and fish come spring. One mostly filled with terminal tackle is less spectacular to open, but it genuinely restocks a tackle box — often the best value for someone who fishes a lot.
Watch for one detail the photos hide well: lure size. Some entry-level calendars are packed with tiny models, perfect for perch and sunfish, useless for walleye or pike. If the gift is for someone who chases predators, check the stated dimensions before ordering.
When to order so it arrives before December 1st
This is the question that ruins the most gifts. An advent calendar that arrives on December 8th has lost a quarter of its point, and there is no catching up: the date is the date.
The simple rule: order in October, or by the first half of November at the latest. December shipping is the busiest of the year and quoted delays stretch every year as Christmas approaches. If you order after November 20th, pay for fast shipping rather than gamble.
October has a second, less obvious advantage: that is when the choice is complete. By December, what is left is usually what nobody wanted.
What to check before buying
Four points, in order of importance. First the target species: a calendar built for trout and one built for pike have almost nothing in common. Then the water — fresh or salt — because saltwater tackle resists corrosion and costs more, and is wasted on a lake.
Third, the real number of doors. "Advent calendar" ought to mean twenty-four, but some boxes sold under that name hold twelve, or combine doors containing several small pieces to inflate the stated count.
Finally, check whether brands are named. A calendar that names its brands stands behind what is inside; one that only promises "24 assorted lures" leaves everything to interpretation. That is not a dealbreaker for a beginner, but it changes what you should pay.
What budget to plan for
Three tiers stand out. Under $25, you are mostly buying the pleasure of opening a door a day: contents stay modest, usually small terminal tackle and generic lures. That is fine for a child or someone just starting.
Between $25 and $60 is the most interesting zone: enough for an assortment that will genuinely serve next season, without paying branded-box prices.
Above $60 you are into branded calendars, with named lures and sometimes a bag or storage box included. At that price, compare with what the same amount would buy in lures chosen one by one — sometimes the calendar wins, sometimes not.
Be careful with European calendars
A good share of the fishing advent calendars you find searching in French come from Europe. They are often very well stocked, but two things are a problem from Canada.
Shipping first: costs to Canada and customs delays make the order risky for a dated gift, and several of those retailers simply do not ship here. Then the contents: they are built for European species — zander, European black bass, river trout — and the sizes and colours do not always match what we fish on our lakes.
That does not make them bad, far from it. It means a calendar bought from a retailer that ships to Canada arrives on time, and its contents are more likely to end up in the water than at the back of a drawer.
Build your own fishing advent calendar
This is the answer when everything is sold out, and it is often the better gift. You need twenty-four small numbered bags or envelopes, and twenty-four items. The budget is entirely under your control, and the contents are chosen for the person.
A split that works well: a dozen assorted lures (soft plastics, spinners, one or two crankbaits), six or seven pieces of terminal tackle (hooks, swivels, weights, snaps), three or four small accessories (hook pliers, braid scissors, a spool of fluorocarbon, a bite indicator), and two or three "fun" doors — a coffee, a toque, a sticker.
Two ideas that change everything. Put something you do together behind door 24: a card with a trip date, a paid licence, a day already booked. And number the doors keeping the biggest lures for the end — the waiting is half the gift.
Other gift ideas for an angler
If the calendar is sold out or you want something else, the safe bets stay the same: an assortment of lures suited to the species they chase, long-nose pliers, a fillet knife, a headlamp for before-dawn starts, or a storage box.
For a gift that outlasts a lure, think about what is not consumed: a subscription, a day at an outfitter, or simply a trip planned for spring.
Frequently asked questions
What is inside a fishing advent calendar?
Twenty-four doors holding lures (soft plastics, spinners, crankbaits, jigs), terminal tackle (hooks, swivels, weights, snaps) and a few accessories. The balance between the three varies a lot between models, and it decides whether the calendar genuinely restocks a tackle box.
When should I order a fishing advent calendar?
In October, or by the first half of November at the latest. They are made in limited runs and several models sell out before December. A calendar arriving on December 8th has lost a quarter of its point, and the date does not wait.
Is it a good gift for a beginner?
Yes, one of the best. A beginner has no fixed preferences yet, and discovering twenty-four different lures teaches more than one expensive lure. Pick an entry-level model and just check that the lure sizes match the fish they are after.
What budget for a fishing advent calendar?
Under $25 you are mostly buying the pleasure of opening a door a day. Between $25 and $60 is the sweet spot: an assortment that will serve next season. Above $60 you are into branded calendars — compare then with what the same amount buys in lures chosen one by one.
How do I build a fishing advent calendar myself?
Twenty-four small numbered bags, holding: a dozen assorted lures, six or seven pieces of terminal tackle, three or four small accessories, and two or three "fun" doors. Keep the biggest lures for the end, and put a planned fishing trip behind door 24.
Do European fishing advent calendars ship to Canada?
Not always, and that is the main risk. Shipping costs to Canada and customs delays make the order a gamble for a dated gift. Their contents are also built for European species, so sizes and colours do not always match our lakes.
Is a fishing advent calendar suitable for a child?
Very much so, as long as you check the hooks. Entry-level models often hold small lures without trebles, safer to handle. For a younger child, a home-made calendar lets you remove the sharp pieces and add doors that do not bite.
What if every calendar is sold out?
Two options. Build one yourself, which usually costs less and makes a more personal gift. Or give an assortment of lures in a storage box: less suspense, the same contents, and no deadline.
Advent calendar or lure box: which should I give?
The calendar wins if the gift is handed over before December 1st — the twenty-four days of waiting are part of the pleasure. The box wins after that date, or if the person already fishes a lot and has precise preferences, so you can choose lures they will actually use.
