The fish-finder lure

The crankbait mimics an injured baitfish. Its lip (the longer it is, the deeper the lure dives) creates an erratic wobble that triggers a reflex strike from predators.

Depth ranges

  • Shallow crank (0–2 m): bays, weeds — dawn in summer
  • Medium crank (2–4 m): drop-offs, weed edges — bass love these
  • Deep crank (4–8 m): deep structure, largemouth and walleye in summer

Technique

Cast, retrieve at constant speed (fast for shallows, slow for deep). Bump bottom or structures — irregular contacts often draw the strike.

Species

  • Smallmouth bass: 5–7 cm cranks in natural colors
  • Walleye: lipless crankbait or silver medium diver
  • Pike: 10–15 cm cranks in bold colors
  • Musky: jumbo 20+ cm cranks

Steady cast-and-retrieveCrank-stop-crank (pauses)Trolling
