The Quebec classic
A minnow (live baitfish such as a fathead, emerald shiner, or lake chub) is the most effective bait for walleye in cold water.
Rigs
- Single hook through the lips or tail so it swims freely
- Under a float adjusted to the depth where the fish are (usually 3–6 m for walleye)
- On a jig: live minnow on a 1/8 to 1/4 oz jig head, slow vertical jigging
Keep them alive
- Bait bucket with aerator, water from the lake you're fishing
- Change the water every 30 min in summer
- Hooked through lips = swims longer. Through tail = more vibration.

⚠️ It is illegal to transport live baitfish between water bodies. Buy them on-site from a licensed dealer.
