The fly that catches big fish

The streamer is a fly that imitates a small baitfish (minnow, sculpin, trout fry). Unlike dry flies targeting insect hatches, the streamer targets predator instinct. It's the serious fly fisher's weapon for big trout.

Classics

  • Woolly Bugger: black, olive, or brown. The most versatile streamer in the world.
  • Muddler Minnow: imitates a sculpin, excellent for brown trout
  • Zonker: rabbit fur strip, extreme action
  • Clouser Minnow: for brackish water or bass

Techniques

Strip retrieve

Cast perpendicular to current, let the fly sink, then strip (pull line 10–30 cm at a time) with pauses. The strike comes at the pause.

Swing

Cast downstream, let the fly "pendulum" with the current. Classic for brown trout.

Jigging (lake)

Heavy streamer, sinking line, get to depth. Animate with sharp strips and pauses.
